Peter Warren was first author on a paper that was accepted for presentation at the 2019 Turbomachinery Technical Conference and Exposition in Phoenix, Arizona. The work was titled “Modeling Thermally Grown Oxides in Thermal Barrier Coatings using Koch Fractal.” This work was a new and innovative method of modeling thermal barrier coatings under operation within a power generation gas turbine. The method proposed the implementation of the Koch fractal in order to geometrically model the thermally grown oxide (TGO) within the thermal barrier coating (TBC). Numerical simulations were conducted in the COSMOS lab to analyze the stress, strain, and creep generation of various TBC configurations. The results were compared with the traditional method of modeling TGO, in which a sinusoidal interface is superimposed.
