The Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering has announced Hyoung Jin “Joe” Cho as its next department chair. Cho previously served as interim chair and associate chair of the department. His new appointment will remain in effect for five years.
“I am deeply honored to serve as chair of the MAE department, and I also feel the responsibility of carrying forward the torch that has been handed to me,” Cho says. “I am fortunate to be surrounded by wonderful people — our faculty, staff and students — who are collegial, resilient and open to new ideas. I feel very grateful to be part of this thriving community.”
Cho’s goals as department chair include strengthening the research enterprise in areas such as hypersonics and energy while growing expertise in emerging areas. He also plans to continue improving the quality of the academic programs offered by the department, which includes a mix of degrees and certificates in mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering and biomedical engineering.
By 2032, Cho and the department faculty aim to elevate the graduate program into nationally recognized programs of distinction, reflecting their collective ambition and commitment to excellence, including the goal of advancing aerospace engineering into the top 30 nationally.
“I envision MAE as a department known for the quality of its academic programs, research that addresses important engineering challenges, and strong relationships with our alumni, industry partners and community,” Cho says. “I would like to build a department culture where people work together, support one another, feel comfortable bringing forward new ideas and celebrate excellence. I hope to help MAE produce top talent, create new knowledge, and contribute to innovation in areas important to our community and society.”
But Cho isn’t just focused on research and education. As the department leader, he also wants to create a welcoming environment where every person is appreciated.
“The success of our academic and research programs hinges on the dedication of our faculty and staff,” Cho says. “I would like to help make the MAE department a workplace where people feel appreciated and supported as they pursue ambitious goals. I also hope to get to know our faculty and staff better—their aspirations, goals, and how I can support their success.”
